Advantages of the Matenzitic Ball over the Brainitic Ball
- Steel balls of the same size (high carbon or low carbon) have the same amount of potential energy, but the high carbon steel ball will transfer more kinetic energy to the workpiece due to its structure. It will therefore clean faster.
- Abrasive consumption per blasted unit is low due to high cleaning efficiency. Other costs such as energy, labor, spare parts, etc. are also low compared to low carbon abrasives.
- A smaller amount of high carbon steel shot can transfer more energy than a larger amount of low carbon steel shot. As a result, the amount of steel shot discarded can be reduced along with a cleaner surface. Therefore, the service life of high carbon steel shot is longer.
- Since low carbon steel balls are not tempered, oxides and contaminants formed during atomization cannot be removed. Conductivity levels are therefore higher than with high carbon steel balls. Chloride is more easily transferred to the part and causes possible coating defects.
- In general, in a typical process using high carbon steel balls, cleaning efficiency can be as much as 20% higher compared to a low carbon product.
- Due to the high density of the high carbon steel ball, more energy is transferred to the part and not returned back to the steel ball, as shown below.
